As new paint and sip studios continue to open in and around the Omaha area, you have more choices than ever for your creative entertainment. Here are the 5 TOP reasons to come to Canvas and Cabernet in Aksarben Village for your art-as-entertainment outing:

1.  Location, location, location.  Located in Aksarben Village–the heart of Omaha, there’s always something going on. There are great bars and restaurants right down the block, Stinson Park events and concerts, Omaha Farmer’s Market on Sunday mornings–starting up in May, and a great vibe.

2.  Our artists are the best! Jacqueline, Gabi, Amanda, Stacia, CaSandra, Kalle…all talented artists. Several are educators; all are creative, fun, and know how to teach. Sessions are fun and lively, AND your paintings turn out awesome.

3.  Our inspiring gallery. You won’t find a dropped ceiling, dark paint, and walls filled with clutter; we are proud of our clean, light, and airy gallery feel. Not only can you paint and sip–you can shop, and who doesn’t like to shop??? Jewelry, paintings, ceramics, wood, glass….at all price points. We are open 1/2 hour before, and during paint sessions.

We Feel It, Too

We feel it too…the hint of fall in the air. Tomorrow night kicks off high school football season. Almost every store has their Halloween displays up, and certainly the school supply displays are dwindling now that school is in session.

Who doesn’t love the cooler weather? I can’t wait to dig out those sweatshirts and sweaters. Okay–so maybe we are jumping a little early, BUT– it’s NOT too early to think about painting up a door hanger for fall. You pick the shape; you pick the design. We provide the shape, paints, brushes, instruction, ribbon and even a complimentary drink–all for only $45!

Better Than Expected

Don’t you love it when something you plan goes better than you expected? I never anticipated the popularity and creativity of our guests with our door hanger sessions…both continually amaze me. I don’t know if it’s Pinterest driven, but the ideas that our painters have come up with are so incredible.

One thing that we do very well at Village Canvas and Cabernet is guide to the individuality of our guests. A great example is our Paint Your Pet events, where a guest is painting a furry cat, and someone else is painting a sleek Labrador retriever, and someone else an iguana. With the talent of our guiding artists, they are able to take the class step by step and ensure that everyone is successful, regardless of their painting subject.

If you popped your head in one of our door hanger sessions, you would see 20 people, each painting one of 4 or 5 various shapes–each painting their own subject matter. It’s awesome, and going way better than I ever expected!

Wood Door Hanger Sessions

Practical, functional, and tons of fun to create! We are offering door hanger sessions every month at Door Hanger Sessions, and at our Open Studio sessions as well. Many shapes available, and we are adding new ones all the time–so keep tuned! Our circle shape is the most versatile….any season; any design!

The cost is $45, and includes instruction, wood shape (selected in advance), paints, ribbon, and a complimentary drink. Plan on 2 to 2 1/2 hours to complete.

Sessions are limited to 20 painters, and reservations must be made by 1 week in advance to ensure shapes are available.

Best. Date. Night. EVER.

So, Valentine’s Day is a big event around Village Canvas and Cabernet. Whether we have groups of friends doing “anti-Valentine’s” outings, and just spending quality time together, or couples making it a special event–we remain quite busy for the week before and after February 14th.

Three years ago, we decided to try something a little different. Sure, we could do a diptych painting, but we do those all year round…we wanted something original, something unique, something that no one else in town is doing. We came up with Paint Your Date.

Our Paint Your Date event includes a bottle of wine, appetizers and a pre-sketched canvas using the cubism style. So, basically, one side of the face is looking sideways, and the other is looking straight on. It’s very clever, and LOTS of fun to paint! It’s definitely not serious, but its definitely special.

We are holding two events this year (like last year), and anticipate both nights to sell out. The cost is $100 per couple.  Seats are limited, but still available. Hurry so you don’t get shut out!

Happy New Year

We are already half-way through the month of January, 2016. The holidays seems like AGES ago, and winter has taken hold. Personally, I love this time of year. I (for whatever reason) enjoy the crisp cold weather. It makes the gallery seem extra cozy, especially if it happens to be snowing outside.

I didn’t anticipate the “seasonality” of the paint and sip business to the extent it is, but fall/winter/spring is definitely the time we are busiest. During the summer months, there are just too many activities that compete–concerts, picnics, bike riding, vacations–and more. Who wouldn’t rather be outside–at least until it gets brutally hot?

Therefore, I work more during the cold months, and cherish the quiet of the gallery when I arrive every day; anticipating the good cheer of my guests who will arrive to paint, sip, laugh and enjoy some creative time with friends, family and co-workers.

Happy New Year!

Never Say Never

Recently, we started offering wooden cut out shapes to paint for door hangers….after I have been saying for three years that I would “never”. Many people asked why we didn’t –and my answer–they tipped a little too much into the “craft” arena. I wanted to stay as consistent as possible with canvas paintings.

However, the requests didn’t stop–as a matter of fact–they only increased, and I buckled under the pressure. After chatting with an artist friend who used to have a studio at the Hot Shops Art Center, he agreed to cut some prototypes to see how well they were received.

Guess what? The sessions have been enormously popular! I’m happy to say I was wr..wr..wrong. Moral of the story–never say never!

Zip-idy-Do-Da: Drinks A Plenty

We recently started carrying Zipline beer, brewed in Lincoln, and it has been very well received. This is the only local beer we carry as of now, and it was suggested by a couple of 20-somethings who love it.

Arbella Distributing is my connection, and they are AWESOME to work with! Responsive, attentive and just plain nice folks…it has been a super easy transaction to make.

We have just 3 of their beers:  Copper Alt, the German style Kolsch, and we just finished up the Country White (seasonal) which we’ve replaced with a personal favorite of mine–the Nut Brown Ale (also seasonal).

It’s always fun when people are pleased that we offer something other than wine. Along with our beers: Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, Stella Artois, Corona, Bud Light “rita” drinks, and non-alcoholic O’Douls, we have a couple sparkling wines, Bailey’s Irish Cream for coffee or on the rocks, and the ever favorite Rum Chata for shots, coffee or with root beer.

We’ve got an assortment of sodas, hot tea, coffee, and will be installing a hot chocolate machine just in time for the winter. Something to quench every one’s thirst!

Do You Want Some Wine With That Cheese?

So many components of creating, establishing and running a business are completely new learning opportunities. Part of our business plan included obtaining a liquor license, which was not as difficult an endeavor, as we imagined it would be, for which we were grateful. Like everything, there was learning curve, a class to take to learn how to be a responsible owner, and a check to write.

What we weren’t aware of before we started the process, was that you can only purchase your alcohol from distributers. A friend of a friend recommended Steve Drehsen from Platinum Wine.

Steve graciously sat down with us and made some suggestions regarding the types of wine that could be popular, and he absolutely hit a home-run with his recommendation of Black Ridge as our house wine. Black Ridge is from California, and it’s really nice.

We serve 6 varietals: Merlot, Cabernet and Pinot Noir for reds; Moscato, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio for whites. Could you guess the most requested? The answer: very sweet Moscato!

We also purchase Moletto Prosecco through Platinum, and its the perfect sparkling wine–not too sweet; not too dry–and it makes a delicious Mimosa!

Along with our wines, we have beer and non-alcoholic drinks–coffee, hot and iced tea, soda and water. But truly–our wine is center stage, and we highly recommend Steve and Larry Habrock from Platinum as super partners in business!
